At lunch the next day, Maribel chatters with Julie about the auditions. She barely glances my way. When Julie gets up to grab another fruit cup, I say, “Blizz was waiting on our doorstep when we got there.”

She nods. “I know. Raven texted my mom.”

“She’s so great.”

“Raven? Yeah. But don’t get too attached, to her or Will. They’re always leaving.” There’s an edge to Maribel’s voice I’ve never heard before. I thought she was okay with me not auditioning, but she’s obviously upset about something.

“Like the Guatemala trip?”

“Yeah, or off to Chicago for three months, or the summer before last they took an RV across the country. Like my mom says, ‘Raven’s a visionary, but she’s not the most reliable.’ Same goes for Will.”

On this ominous declaration, Maribel turns back to Julie, who has returned with fruit cups for both of them.

I don’t think Maribel’s chilliness is about the audition anymore. It felt like we got through that yesterday. But something else happened between then and now. Is she seriously mad at me because Blizz got out?
